Cylindrical ring made of anti-spark, material, normally graphite, installed in the mechanical seal’s stationary flange. The bushing is sized with a tight clearance tolerance between the shaft or the machine’s rotating shaft sleeve to channel the seal’s physiological leakage towards the flange drainage connection, avoid contact between the seal flange and the shaft sleeve in case of abnormal and unforeseen shaft radial movements, and allow seal washing/cooling with atmospheric pressure flushing (plan 62). The bushing is capable of following the radial movement of the rotating shaft, hence it is called floating.
